Kumulipo
The Chant of Creation
The Kumulipo is the Hawaiian creation chant — over two thousand lines of cosmogony spoken in darkness, describing the emergence of all life from the primordial night. It begins with coral and moves through every living form in evolutionary order, centuries before Darwin articulated the same progression in prose.
The Ocean of Origins
In the Kumulipo cosmology, the ocean is not a body of water — it is the original medium of consciousness. All life emerged from it not accidentally but as expressions of an intelligence the ocean had been developing since before the planet cooled. The Kumulipo is the ocean's autobiography.
The Living Genealogy
Every Hawaiian chiefly line was connected to the Kumulipo — their genealogy traced not just through human ancestors but through all living things back to the first night. To know your full lineage in this cosmology is to know yourself as a particular expression of the universe's four-billion-year story.
