The fae withdrawal from human perception was not driven by disbelief in them — the folk traditions maintained living belief in many regions until well into the industrial period. It was driven by disbelief in the kind of world the fae require: a world with edges, with liminal spaces, with the understanding that not everything in the forest has been catalogued. The systematic rationalization of the European landscape in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries — the enclosure of commons, the draining of marshes, the clear-cutting of old growth — removed not just physical habitat but conceptual habitat. There was no more room for them in the worldview, and a worldview without room for them generates a landscape without room for them, and here we are.
The tithing system — the transfer every hundred years of seven humans of extraordinary sensitivity across the veil — has never stopped. The historical record contains what appear to be gaps: individuals who disappear from documentation in the prime of life, often described by contemporaries as "fey" or "touched" or simply "different in ways that couldn't be explained." The intervals are consistent. The profile of the selected individuals is consistent. The fae have been maintaining the relationship throughout the centuries of separation, on their side of the veil, in their own time.
The conditions for return are, by all indications, now present. The rewilding movements — both physical and psychological — have begun restoring the conceptual habitat. The proliferation of experiences that resist rational explanation has generated, in a significant portion of the population, precisely the epistemic humility the fae have been waiting for: the willingness to say "I don't know what that was" rather than "that couldn't have been what it seemed." The thin places are opening. The reports are increasing. The patience is apparently paying off.
